EN The land is currently characterized by the large difference in level between the level of Rua Papa João Paulo II and Levada dos Piornais. This unevenness is punctually regularized by 3 slopes structured by prepared basalt stone walls. The 20 meters of accumulated difference promote different levels of relationship with the view and protection from the street bordering the lot. The steep slope of the land does not allow an easy appropriation of outdoor spaces for recreation and leisure for the enjoyment of children. Thus, the first action is on the terrain, seeking to adapt it to this appropriation, introducing two new terraces that will create 4 flat areas.

The proposed modeling is balanced in the relationship between the landfill and excavation areas, and also in the relationship with the existing retaining walls, which are fully maintained. After modeling, the exercise of interpreting the potential of each new platform/yard with the program begins, assuming as a starting point that the bedroom yard is located at a higher level, as a guarantee of privacy, security and greater privilege in relation to the view. At the lower level, there is the entrance yard, on a level platform for public access to the building, which will function as an extension of the public space, functioning as a public/private transition area, already inside the Lot, culminating in a small porch overlooking the view.

A The intermediate platform will be the swing yard, mediating the relationship between the aforementioned yards. The program integrates in an articulated way with the terraces, seeking to take advantage of them as areas of expansion of the interior spaces. The area destined for the bedrooms stands out for being the only one that is not integrated into the new terraces, assuming itself as an independent body, with a strong materiality in pigmented concrete and a volumetry that brings it closer to traditional Madeiran constructions, in proportion, design of the roof and relationship with the views.

This archetypal presence and its use are intended to build the image of a Home, on which we believe the relationship between the Children and the Foundation during their stays depends. The 1st floor is for the children’s common areas, where the relationship with the yard and the view is privileged. This floor is also characterized by two large patios that guarantee natural lighting and ventilation to the inner spaces. The ground floor, with level access from the street, taking advantage of its unevenness, receives the administrative areas and the living room, and has a more conditioned relationship with the outside, also taking advantage of a small patio for lighting the work areas.

Integrated into the first terrace, which already exists, will be floor -1. Destined exclusively for the garage and technical areas, it could also be a more protected access point to the interior of the building, taking advantage of the elevator that serves all floors from here.

O terreno atualmente caracteriza-se pelo grande desnível entre o nível da Rua Papa João Paulo II e a Levada dos Piornais.
Esse desnível é regularizado pontualmente por 3 taludes estruturados por muros de pedra basáltica aparelhada. Os 20 metros de desnível acumulado promovem diferentes níveis de relação com a vista e de proteção relativamente à rua fronteira ao lote.

A elevada inclinação do terreno não permite uma fácil apropriação dos espaços exteriores de recreio e lazer para fruição pelas Crianças. Assim, a primeira ação é sobre o terreno, procurando adequá-lo a esta apropriação, introduzindo dois novos socalcos que criarão 4 zonas planas. A modelação proposta é equilibrada na relação entre as áreas de aterro e desaterro, e também na relação com os muros de contenção existentes, sendo os mesmos mantidos integralmente.

Após a modelação, inicia-se o exercício de interpretação do potencial de cada nova plataforma / terreiro com o programa, assumindo-se como ponto de partida que o terreiro dos quartos se localize numa cota mais elevada, como garantia de privacidade, segurança e de maior privilégio na relação com a vista. No nível inferior surge o terreiro de entrada, numa plataforma nivelada de acesso público ao edifício que funcionará como uma extensão do espaço público funcionando como área de transição público / privado, já dentro do Lote, culminando num pequeno alpendre sobre a vista. A
plataforma intermédia será o terreiro dos baloiços, mediando a relação entre os terreiros anteriormente referidos.

O programa integra-se de forma articulada com os terreiros, procurando deles tirar partido como áreas de expansão dos espaços interiores. A área destinada aos quartos destaca-se por ser a única que não está integrada nos novos socalcos, assumindo-se como um corpo independente, com uma materialidade forte em betão pigmentado e uma volumetria que o aproxima das construções tradicionais madeirenses, na proporção, desenho da cobertura e relação com as vistas.

Esta presença arquétipa e o seu uso, pretendem construir a imagem de um Lar, da qual acreditamos depender a relação das Crianças com a Fundação durante as suas permanências. O piso 1 destina-se às áreas comuns das crianças, onde se privilegia a relação com o terreiro e a vista. Este piso caracteriza-se ainda por dois grandes pátios que garantem iluminação e ventilação natural aos espaços mais interiores. O piso 0, com acesso de nível pela Rua tirando partido do seu desnível, recebe as áreas administrativas e a sala de visitas, e tem a sua relação com o exterior mais condicionada, tirando também partido de um pequeno pátio para iluminação das áreas de trabalho. Integrado no primeiro socalco, já existente, ficará o piso -1. Destinado exclusivamente a garagem e áreas técnicas poderá ser também um ponto de acesso mais protegido ao interior do edifício, tirando partido do elevador que desde aqui serve todos os pisos.
